When I came to MIT and I told people that I was going to be studying the human quotient in technology, people kept saying to me: 'But technology is just a tool, what's to study?' I just insist that technology changes the way we think. Technology does things for us, but it also does things to us. It changes how we think about ourselves, it changes our relationship to the world, how we see the world, our relationships with each other. And now more than ever, technology is changing how we see ourselves, our identities, our relationships to the world, how we communicate, how we raise our children, our relationships with our children. So to just say: 'Oh, it is just a tool', it is a tool that makes and shapes our life. Winston Churchill says we make our buildings and our buildings make and shape us. That is what technology is doing to us.
